“Preparation, Hecklers, and Causing Offense” – 10 Questions with a Comedian

I’ve been a professional comedian for 10 years, here’s a quick Q&A about comedy!

Do you have questions about comedy, writing, or me being a huge nerd? Ask away! Fill out the form here!

Questions:

1. From Michelle: How much of your set is fully prepared and practiced and how much is spur of the moment ? Which one of those two work best for you?

2. From Sarah: How do you deal with a live joke that doesn’t land? Is there a way to break the tension, or do you just move on?

3. Is there a way to practice a “tight five” before you perform it? How do you know it will go over well?

4. Have you ever had hecklers at a live show? How do you deal with that?

5. From Anonymous: How do you get into the comedic mindset when you’re not in the mood to be funny, or life feels too heavy to joke about?

6. From Smgwritings: How do you figure out good comedic timing? Or is that something you have to have naturally?

7. Are there boundaries at local comedy shows? I’ve been wanting to do comedy for some time but I’m afraid I may just offend a bunch of people and becoming hated.

8. If one were to do a set in a very minimal crowd of say 5-10 and a couple weeks later be in a new room would it be bad to try the same set you did previously?

9. What’s the number 1 tip you have for someone who wants to try comedy for the first time?

10. Where can we see more of your stuff?
